ASUS's seven-inch MeMo tablet has just ducked under the FCC's gates, but some benchmark results for a purported Google and ASUS team-up could tally with the same device. According to the listing, the Google Asus Nexus 7 will arrive with NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 CPU, clocked at 1.3 GHz, while that (presumably) 7-inch screen packs a 768 x 1280 resolution. The hardware specs end there, but thanks to some investigation by Android Police and Rightware, it appears that this mystery tablet is running Android 4.1 -- possibly the version number for Android's next iteration, Jelly Bean. There are several more hints adding credence to these benchmark results, including the fish-based "grouper" codename, which follows the Stingray moniker that was handed to the Motorola Xoom ahead of its reveal. We're just itching to know whether it'll still manage a sub-$300 price-tag.

To test the theory we launched Oakville. I?ll tell you the back-story to that one day, but for now I simply wanted to begin expanding and keeping the momentum and positive vibe that surrounded us.

The business model is simple, develop and launch one network after another into nearby towns and cities. To date we have 15 lined up. Bobcats part ways with Silas, begin search for new coach

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The worst team in NBA history will have a new coach next season.

The Charlotte Bobcats have decided not to renew coach Paul Silas' contract after the team finished 7-59 this season for the worst winning percentage in league history (.106).

"We have been talking internally about what is best for us going forward," Bobcats president of basketball operations Rod Higgins said at a news conference Monday. "The record kind of speaks for itself. When you look at the youthfulness of this roster ... we just all felt collectively that the change was something we wanted to do at this time."

The 68-year-old Silas, who told The Associated Press late in the season he wanted to "see things through" and coach one more year, said Monday he found out earlier in the day he would not be brought back.

Silas said he was not surprised by the decision.

"I'm ok with that," he said. "I have had a very successful career coaching and playing and it's time to move on."

Silas said he was promised a job in the organization by team owner Michael Jordan and said he's retiring from coaching.

It's unclear who'll replace Silas, who leaves with a 32-88 record at Charlotte. Higgins said a search for his replacement will begin immediately.

"We do not have a timetable. We will start as soon as this presser is over," he said. "I just don't want to say there is a time frame. We plan on interviewing quite a few people. We want to find the right guy."

Higgins said Silas' son, Stephen Silas - who served as an assistant under his father and led the team in several games - will be interviewed for the job, but added finding someone with heading coaching experience "is important."

"We want someone who wants to win," Higgins said. "That's the main quality. We will have quite a few candidates. I would say there are quite a few people who come into mind."

Finding someone who might be interested in taking over the last-place Bobcats might not be easy. They're light on talent and experience and it could be a long way from competing for a playoff spot.

Bobcats general manager Rich Cho is aware this job might not be for everyone.

"Those are the type of coaches we don't want to bring in," Cho said. "I want somebody that will relish the opportunity and look at it as a challenge. It's really easy to go to a winning team and take that opportunity. But I want somebody in here that's going to look at this as a great opportunity and a challenge and a chance to build something from the ground up."

Silas was in a difficult situation heading into the season with a young and inexperienced team, plus a shortened offseason that limited practice time. Injuries to top players like Corey Maggette, D.J. Augustin and Gerald Henderson did not help.

"I respect Paul to the utmost," Higgins said. "He wanted to be successful but it was an unfortunate thing that it didn't happen."

Late in the season, Silas was involved in an altercation with forward Tyrus Thomas, shoving him in the locker room following a loss. The two had gotten into an argument and had to be separated.

But Higgins said that didn't factor into the decision to part ways with Silas.

Players tried to rally to his defense after the season to save his job, but to no avail.

"I think Paul did the best he could with the guys he had on the floor," Maggette said Friday. "We went through a year where night after night guys were going down with injuries and you're shooting under 30 percent from the field. You just can't win any games that way. That's tough. So hopefully they give him an opportunity to show what type of a coach he is and what he can bring to the table here."

But in the end it was hard for the Bobcats to justify keeping him.

They were last in the league in scoring and shooting percentage and lost 22 games by 20 or more points.

DALLAS (AP) ? The maker of Tide Pods will create a new double-latch lid to deter children from accessing and eating the brightly colored detergent packets, a company spokesman said Friday.

Procter & Gamble spokesman Paul Fox said the Cincinnati-based company plans to create a new lid on tubs of Tide Pods "in the next couple of weeks." The company continues to study the design of the package, Fox said.

Doctors say children sometimes swallow Tide Pods and similar laundry products, around 1 inch cubes that are meant to be dropped into a washing machine in place of liquid or powder detergent. Nearly 250 cases nationally have been reported to poison control centers this year, a figure that's expected to rise. No deaths have been reported.

Almost all of the cases so far have been reported since March, when several companies began to market the packets. A handful of children have been hospitalized for several days.

Texas reported 71 instances of exposure this year, all but one in March or later. Missouri reported 25 cases related to the packets, and Illinois reported 26.

Some children might be confusing the tubs of colorfully swirled detergent packets for bowls of candy, said Bruce D. Anderson, director of operations at the Maryland Poison Center. Maryland has reported 15 cases this year.

"Kids are very bright and will find a way to get to something that they want to get to," he said.

Dr. Michael Buehler of the Carolinas Poison Center said Tide's tougher lid could make a difference.

"In a nutshell, yes, it would be good, but I don't know enough," Buehler said. "It's too early to tell."

Spokesmen for Purex, All and Arm & Hammer did not immediately return requests for comment about whether their companies also planned changes. Kathryn Corbally, a spokeswoman for Sun Products Corp., said the company is evaluating its packaging.

The packets appear to cause more severe symptoms than typical detergent, possibly because a single packet has a full cup's worth of detergent or because the packets might activate more quickly or differently.

In suburban Philadelphia, a 17-month-old boy climbed onto a dresser and popped a detergent package in his mouth. The boy vomited, became drowsy and started coughing, said Dr. Fred Henretig of the Poison Control Center at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The boy was put on a ventilator for a day and hospitalized for a week.

That We Might Be Adopted: Home Improvement in Addis

A mission team from the University of Kentucky is in Addis Ababa.?

I?ve been so happy to have had some good communication with Jeff from Ethiopia via email and also Skype.? Believe me when I say that I don?t take that for granted.? It?s not unusual to have phone calls fail and the internet be down.? I?m glad to be able to share these photos and try to fill in a bit of what I?ve heard about the team.

On Monday, the team went to Hope Enterprises to serve lunch to many homeless men, women and children.

Today (Tuesday) the team prepared to do some work projects at Adoption Ministry 1:27?s newest program site in Addis.?? Bed frames and mattresses were purchased and loaded onto the van to be given to 10 families.

Then the team went to three homes of widows living in this community to paint the interior walls of their homes.? What an amazing sight it must have been for these dear people to see this team of big, strong ?ferengi? arrive to serve them! ?Just look at that smile!

Soon cement floors will be poured to cover the dirt floors that are now there.? No cement mixers deliver the materials ? instead, they arrive by donkey.

There were quite a few onlookers?

with varied reactions to the white faces they saw!

A grateful recipient of the team?s work insisted on giving them a coffee ceremony.

A new pair of shoes were given to this woman to replace her old canvas shoes.

It was a day of hard work and the team left this community full of gratitude and humility as they were able to give to those who so gratefully received!

Tomorrow the team heads to Gutumuma where they'll conduct sports camps for the children at the government school there. ?I'm not sure how much communication I'll have but I hope to keep you posted!

ScienceDaily (May 21, 2012) ? Scientists have devised a method for repeatedly encoding, storing and erasing digital data within the DNA of living cells.

Sometimes, remembering and forgetting are hard to do.

"It took us three years and 750 tries to make it work, but we finally did it," said Jerome Bonnet, PhD, of his latest research, a method for repeatedly encoding, storing and erasing digital data within the DNA of living cells.

Bonnet, a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University, worked with graduate student Pakpoom Subsoontorn and assistant professor Drew Endy, PhD, to reapply natural enzymes adapted from bacteria to flip specific sequences of DNA back and forth at will. All three scientists work in the Department of Bioengineering, a joint effort of the School of Engineering and the School of Medicine.

In practical terms, they have devised the genetic equivalent of a binary digit -- a "bit" in data parlance. "Essentially, if the DNA section points in one direction, it's a zero. If it points the other way, it's a one," Subsoontorn explained.

"Programmable data storage within the DNA of living cells would seem an incredibly powerful tool for studying cancer, aging, organismal development and even the natural environment," said Endy.

Researchers could count how many times a cell divides, for instance, and that might someday give scientists the ability to turn off cells before they turn cancerous.

In the computer world, their work would form the basis of what is known as non-volatile memory -- data storage that can retain information without consuming power. In biotechnology, it is known by a slightly more technical term, recombinase-mediated DNA inversion, after the enzymatic processes used to cut, flip and recombine DNA within the cell.

The team calls its device a "recombinase addressable data" module, or RAD for short. They used RAD to modify a particular section of DNA with microbes that determines how the one-celled organisms will fluoresce under ultraviolet light. The microbes glow red or green depending upon the orientation of the section of DNA. Using RAD, the engineers can flip the section back and forth at will.

They reported their findings in a paper published online May 21 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Bonnet is the first author of the paper, and Endy is the senior author.

To make their system work, the team had to control the precise dynamics of two opposing proteins, integrase and excisionase, within the microbes. "Previous work had shown how to flip the genetic sequence -- albeit irreversibly -- in one direction through the expression of a single enzyme," Bonnet said, "but we needed to reliably flip the sequence back and forth, over and over, in order to create a fully reusable binary data register, so we needed something different."

"The problem is that the proteins do their own thing. If both are active at the same time, or concentrated in the wrong amounts, you get a mess and the individual cells produce random results," Subsoontorn continued.

The researchers found it was fairly easy to flip a section of DNA in either direction. "But we discovered time and again that most of our designs failed when the two proteins were used together within the same cell," said Endy. "Ergo: Three years and 750 tries to get the balance of protein levels right."

Bonnet has now tested RAD modules in single microbes that have doubled more than 100 times and the switch has held. He has likewise switched the latch and watched a cell double 90 times, and set it back. The latch will even store information when the enzymes are not present. In short, RAD works. It is reliable and it is rewritable.

For Endy and the team, the future of computing then becomes not only how fast or how much can be computed, but when and where computations occur and how those computations might impact our understanding of and interaction with life.

"One of the coolest places for computing," Endy said, "is within biological systems." His goal is to go from the single bit he has now to eight bits -- or a "byte" -- of programmable genetic data storage.

"I'm not even really concerned with the ways genetic data storage might be useful down the road, only in creating scalable and reliable biological bits as soon as possible. Then we'll put them in the hands of other scientists to show the world how they might be used," Endy said.

To get there, however, science will need many new tools for engineering biology, he added, but it will not be easy. "Such systems will likely be 10 to 50 times more complicated than current state-of-the-art genetic engineering projects," he said.

For what it is worth, Endy anticipates their second bit of rewritable DNA data will arrive faster than the first and the third faster still, but it will take time.

"We're probably looking at a decade from when we started to get to a full byte," he said. "But, by focusing today on tools that improve the engineering cycle at the heart of biotechnology, we'll help make all future engineering of biology easier, and that will lead us to much more interesting places."

The research was funded by the National Science Foundation's Synthetic Biology Engineering Research Center, and by fellowship grants from Stanford's Center for Longevity and its Bio-X program.
