Google Change Hurting Small Business ? Inc. Wire.

Technology

An update to the search algorithm has meant setbacks for small business.

One of Google?s most recent search algorithm changes is hurting small business, CNBC reports.

The search giant makes regular changes to its search technology to try to deliver more high-quality results. The April update, dubbed ?Penguin,? was aimed at avoiding ?over-optimized websites that were stuffed with keywords in an attempt to improve their search rankings,? CNBC explains.

While large companies with deep pockets have been able to quickly react and save their rankings by changing their search engine optimization efforts, a lot of small businesses are having a harder time, SEO expert Todd Bailey told CNBC:

The ones that are really feeling the change are the small businesses who may have hired an SEO vendor and didn?t know what they were doing to improve ranking, but now they are being penalized.

In order to adapt to these updates, Bailey says businesses must change their SEO strategy to focus on quality content.

On its blog, Google outlined the 52 changes in the April update. Among them: pointing users to more diverse sites and local sites, and expanding the autocomplete feature to include 60-plus languages.??Caitlin Berens
